When we were kids, we used to dream about what we wanted to be when we grew up. These dreams were big and we could really visualise them happening. As we get older, we find it harder to dream, and when we do, we feel that they are impossible.

We are often told to “go for it” and to “live life to the full”, but we don’t always know how to get there and that can put us off altogether. We often feel like external factors and our circumstances stop us from reaching our potential, or we might just not have the self-belief.

So it’s important to know that there are several steps in between having the dream and going for it. Between having the idea and seeing it come to fruition. It takes conscious effort, practice and skill to fill in the gap between knowing what to do and doing it. But achieving your dream is possible. That’s where goals come in.

When advertising companies tell us to go for it, it’s usually about getting more of what we already have. It’s usually about increasing our possessions. But these are not real goals because the real purpose of a goal isn’t about getting more of what you already have, but growing as a person.

There are three types of goals; “A” goals, which you know how to achieve, “B” goals, which are goals that you think you can achieve by using the resources and skills that are already available to you, and “C” goals, goals you desperately want but have never gone after before and you don’t know where to start.

The most inspiring, most daring, and most rewarding goals are the “C” type goals. This is because after reaching this goal you have grown and developed as a person. These goals scare us because they come from big dreams, and an uncertainty of how to get there. You have to find the resources, the pathway, and the inner determination to go for something that you really want, but up until now you haven’t tried.

So, what are the steps towards achieving a “C’ type goal? First, we need to re-learn how to dream. It’s necessary for your goal to start with a dream, because a dream is based on your desires, and your desires are strong motivators. As adults though, we are conditioned to think that dreaming is silly and a waste of time, but it is in dreaming that we create and innovate, discover what is really important, and have a space to be hopeful and bold.

Then we must know how to transform a dream into a goal, and that starts with making a theory. A theory is created by attaching strong images to that dream – what might reaching this goal look like? What might it feel like? Who might be around you and what are their reactions? What emotions will you be feeling? You might want to collect photos or draw pictures, whatever works for you. Once we have images attached we become more emotionally invested and committed. What was once a vague idea can start to look more concrete.

The next step is turning your theory into a goal. This takes some self-evaluation and self-belief. You need to answer questions like “Am I willing and able?” Once you answer yes, and recognise your potential and ability to go for what you want, you will start to behave differently and see more positive results. You have now turned that theory into fact.

Everything is connected, from how you think, to how you feel, and how you behave. By thinking you can do something and then taking the steps to make it happen, you are living a fulfilling life. And the most exciting thing is – you are in control of this process. It doesn’t matter what others say or what your circumstances are, you have the courage and the ability to change how you think and behave.

Humans, as powerful thinkers and feelers, are equipped to achieve goals. In reaching our goals we feel happier and become more productive. Ultimately, by changing ourselves, we have the potential to change the world.
